New fieldtrip app from Edina

Edina and JISC have created a new app for fieldtrips designed for mobile mapping and data capture. It can be used on iPhone and android devices. The app contains:

  • detailed maps
  • map caching so that you don’t have to be connected to a network
  • data capture
  • forms to allow you to define the data to be captured which you can create through a web authoring tool.

It is already available in the Google Play store and will soon be available from iTunes. You can find out more about developments from http://fieldtripgb.blogs.edina.ac.uk/news/

Changes to DigiMap

MasterMap Download and Boundary Download applications are being withdrawn at the end of May 2013. The same data is now available through Data Download in Digimap’s OS Collection.

If you have teaching materials, or course notes which are currently based on the old MasterMap Download and Boundary Download applications, please make sure you update them before these facilities are withdrawn. Edina have a blogpost with more information about the change at: http://digimap.blogs.edina.ac.uk/2013/02/08/os-mastermap-and-boundaries-now-in-digimap-data-download/.

The new interface allows you to select data from different years going back to 2009 to allow you to compare an area over a period of time.

Geography Seminar Series – 21st November 4-5pm

Growing Regenerative Communities of Food

Alison Blay-Palmer

Associate Professor, Geography and Environmental Studies, Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada

Zoological Museum (Room 129), Wallace

In this talk, food offers a lens through which to address globalization pressures faced by communities in all places.

The complexity of problems such as climate change, food and nutrition insecurity, high rates of food related disease, and escalating rates of unemployment point to the merits of adopting a sustainable food systems perspective. At the same time, there is increasing evidence that we need to explore different community problems and place-based solutions so we can help communities define what works for them.  In keeping with the multi-disciplinary approach necessitated by these far-reaching questions, this presentation draws on the regional development and sustainable communities literatures as well as from transition and social economy theories.

The presentation focuses on findings from a survey in Ontario, Canada of over 350 community projects, including 21 case studies. The research project has resulted in the creation of several deliverables including a toolkit that captures best practices from the region and includes recommendations about the creation of more sustainable food systems. The talk will also explore the intersection of challenges and solutions for communities in the Global North and South.

This seminar is open to all, and we look forward to your company at this and future seminars in the series.

Please contact Dr Kate Evans (K.R.Evans@swansea.ac.uk) if you have any queries.

Historic maps online

The official UK launch of a website of historic maps,  Historic Maps Online, has taken place this week. Never before has there been such a large single searchable collection of historic maps online.    It is possible to search by typing a place-name or by clicking in the map window.  You can search by date alone or narrow by date.  At present the date coverage is between the 1570s and the 1950s.

The site provides access to collections at the British Library, the National Library of Scotland, the Moravian Library in the Czech Republic and the David Rumsey Collection in California.   Later this year other collections will be added from the National Library of Wales, the Bodleian Library, Harvard University, the New York Public Library and several major European libraries.

You can find it at www.oldmapsonline.org. Further information about the project is also available.

New geography journal titles

We have a new deal with the American Geophysical Union allowing us to access all their journal titles online. They can be accessed at http://www.agu.org/pubs/journals/. Details will be added to the library catalogue shortly.
